-Mohali: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, successfully performed a living donor liver transplant on a 38-year-old man from Amloh in Punjab, who had been suffering from chronic liver disease for over three years. The life-saving procedure was carried out by a team of experts comprising Dr. Kaptan Singh consultant HPB surgery & liver transplant, Dr. Manmohan Singh Bedi director GI, HPB & liver transplant, Dr. Atul Sachdev principal director – gastroenterology and their team.

38-year-old Baljeet  Singh, was first diagnosed with chronic liver disease in 2022 after he experienced blood in his vomit, weakness, and dizziness. Despite an early diagnosis, his condition gradually worsened as he continued treatment at local centers and delayed seeking expert care. In April 2025, the patient was brought to Max Hospital, Mohali, with a high-grade fever. Initially managed with medication, later his Liver function deteriorated, eventually requiring a transplant.

Speaking on the transplant, Dr. Kaptan Singh said, “Initially, his sister had stepped forward to donate her liver, but due to a blood group mismatch, we couldn’t proceed with her liver. Fortunately, his 35-year-old wife turned out to be a suitable donor. After all the necessary tests, we proceeded with the transplant. Living donor liver transplantation is a feasible and life-saving procedure, especially in patients with end-stage liver disease.  The patient’s diseased liver was removed, and about 62–65% of the donor’s liver was taken up for transplant. The donor now has around 35 percent of the liver that would regenerate fully in 6-8 weeks.”

Post-surgery, the patient and the donor both recovered well. By the time of discharge, Baljeet was in good health and ready to return to a normal life.

This successful transplant marks a major milestone for Max Hospital, Mohali. The hospital aims to bring advanced quality healthcare services closer to the people of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and the Tricity region. With this achievement, Max Hospital, Mohali, is now fully equipped to provide advanced liver transplant services locally, eliminating the need for patients to travel to metro cities for such critical cases.
