CHANDIGARH – The Union Cabinet’s approval of the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme is a significant boost for Punjab’s sports goods industry, particularly in the manufacturing hubs of Jalandhar and Ludhiana, said Sh. Kulwant Gulati, a sports goods manufacturer from Jalandhar, welcoming the Centre’s initiative.
Approved on October 28, 2026, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme has an outlay of Rs. 1,856.67 crore for the period 2026-27 to 2033-34. It aims to strengthen domestic sports equipment manufacturing, reduce import dependence, increase exports and attract around Rs. 6,800 crore in private investment.
Gulati said the initiative could create fresh opportunities for Punjab’s established sports goods manufacturers by encouraging investment, technological advancement and improved manufacturing capabilities. The scheme also aims to develop new integrated manufacturing zones while upgrading existing industry clusters.
Key provisions include capital and turnover-linked incentives for investors and manufacturers, along with support for international quality certifications, research and development, skill development and cluster modernisation.
With Jalandhar and Ludhiana already recognised for their sports goods manufacturing ecosystems, the initiative could help local enterprises enhance their competitiveness, explore international markets and generate employment.
