-Mohali: Colorectal cancer continues to claim countless lives each year despite being one of the most preventable forms of the cancer. Fortis Cancer Institute, Mohali organized a symposium on Colorectal Cancer to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, bringing together leading experts and practitioners from across the country.
The symposium served as a platform to educate healthcare professionals on the risk factors, symptoms, prevention strategies, and latest advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer.
The symposium witnessed the participation of over 130 delegates, including leading colorectal cancer surgeons and oncologists. Experts shared insights on innovative therapeutic approaches, minimally invasive procedures, and the future of cancer care. Among others present on the occasion included, Dr Jitender Rohila, Consultant, GI Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Mohali, Dr Narendra Bhalla, Director, Department of Radiation Oncology; Dr Ketan Dang, Consultant, Medical Oncology; Dr RP Doley, Director, General, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery; Dr Rajeev Kapoor, Additional Director, General, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery and Dr Manishi Bansal, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology.
Dr Rajeev Bedi, Director, Medical Oncology, Fortis Hospital, Mohali said, “Colorectal cancer is emerging as a significant public health concern in India, with its incidence steadily rising over the past few decades. According to the National Cancer Registry, colorectal cancer accounts for approximately 10% of all cancer cases in men and nearly 9% in women, making it as one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in the country.”
Dr. Bedi stressed that risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, rising obesity levels, and genetic predisposition. He further added “Preventive strategies such as maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; engaging in regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight, and limiting the intake of processed foods and red meats are small steps which prove beneficial”
He further emphasized on the importance of early screening, particularly colonoscopies, for individuals over the age of 50 or those with a family history of the ailment. “Timely detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. Public awareness campaigns focused on prevention and early screening are crucial to reducing the burden of colorectal cancer in India,” he added.
Fortis Cancer Institute reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing cancer care through continuous education and professional development. The strong turnout and expert discussions at the symposium underscored the critical role of early screening and multidisciplinary approaches in the fight against colorectal cancer.
