Fortis Hospital Mohali’s Department of Pediatric Cardiac Sciences gave a new beginning to two children from Sangrur suffering from congenital heart conditions. Congenital defects are present at birth and range from a hole in the heart to complex heart problems. Delaying medical treatment may result in death. A one-year-old baby with a congenital heart defect was recently treated by Dr Rajat Gupta, Senior Consultant, Pediatric Cardiology at Fortis Hospital Mohali.
The infant was brought to Fortis Mohali hospital in August, having trouble breathing and eating, as well as being underweight and presenting with cyanosis (bluish discoloration around the lips). Tetralogy of Fallot was discovered after the baby was evaluated. Because the baby’s heart did not develop properly, deficient oxygenated blood circulated through the body via the heart. An open heart surgery was performed by Dr TS Mahant, Executive Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Fortis Mohali, to correct the defect. The baby was discharged five days later, following a successful operation.
A 14-year-old patient was having trouble breathing, palpitations, fainting (blackouts), reduced exercise tolerance, and general fatigue. She approached Dr. Gupta at Fortis Mohali in August. The patient suffered from atrial septal defect, a condition in which the heart’s upper chambers (atria) are separated. This condition occurs when there is a hole in the heart between the atria, allowing oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood. The heart and lungs may be damaged if the ASD is large. The extra blood pumped into the lungs may damage the heart and lungs.
The doctor repaired the patient’s heart defect with an ASD device, thereby avoiding open heart surgery. The patient was discharged two days after the procedure and has been living normally ever since.
