June 20: The Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, announced that appropriate efforts will be made to provide medical facilities to senior journalists. He assured that necessary steps will be taken to achieve this objective. The Governor also highly appreciated the role of the media in strengthening the country’s democracy. He was addressing a function organized by the Senior Journalists Forum, Chandigarh, at Lok Bhavan. Welcoming the Forum members, the Governor emphasized the crucial role of journalism in strengthening democracy and shaping public opinion. He said that through truth, honesty, and impartial analysis, the power of the pen has earned journalists special respect and recognition in society. Shri Kataria noted that many important issues debated in Parliament and State Assemblies historically came to light through journalists’ reports and investigative work. Calling the media a vital pillar of democracy, he praised journalists for bringing public concerns to the attention of governments and policymakers. The Governor stated that highlighting shortcomings in the system is the responsibility of journalists, so that corrective measures can be taken in the public interest.

He added that constructive criticism and fearless journalism help governments and administrations improve their performance and ensure public welfare.Stressing the importance of self-improvement, Shri Kataria remarked: “A person should not hide their shortcomings, but rather learn from them and strive continuously to become better.”He further said that journalists act as guides for governments and administrations by pointing out areas that need reform. Their insights and observations contribute significantly to building transparent, accountable, and people‑centric governance.Appreciating the initiative of the Senior Journalists Forum, the Governor described the platform as a commendable effort to bring senior journalists together. He also acknowledged the difficulties faced by many journalists after retirement and underlined the need for such forums that provide mutual support, encouragement, and opportunities for active participation. Shri Kataria reiterated his assurance that suitable efforts will be made to provide medical facilities to senior journalists.On this occasion, Forum President Shri Jagtar Singh Sidhu welcomed the Governor and apprised him of the objectives and activities of the organization. The Governor also released the logo of the Senior Journalists Forum. Forum Chairman Shri A.S. Prashar expressed gratitude to Punjab Lok Bhavan for hosting the discussion.The dialogue included meaningful exchanges on the role of media in a democratic society and issues related to the welfare of journalists.
