HBV, a liver infection resulting from hepatitis B virus, is exceedingly serious. For some individuals, hepatitis B remains chronic, indicating it lasts more than six months. Liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis—a liver scarring that lasts forever—are all risks associated with having a persistent hepatitis B infection. Most people with hepatitis B recover fully, even if their symptoms are serious. Infants and young children are more likely to develop a long-lasting hepatitis B virus. If you have hepatitis B, you can prevent it by taking precautions. You can’t cure hepatitis B, but it can be prevented by a vaccine.
Blood tests can reveal whether you have acute or chronic hepatitis B or if you are immune to the disease. A transient elastography ultrasound can reveal liver damage. The amount of liver damage can also be determined using this method. During this test, your doctor will insert a tiny needle into your skin and into your liver and then remove a tissue sample for study. You might have a liver biopsy if your doctor believes you have liver damage.
